Tonga’s Joint National Action Plan on Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Management – July 2010
Like rest of the 51 Small Island Developing States (SIDS), Tonga is also highly vulnerable to climate change impacts. It is an archipelago of 172 low-lying islands in the Central South Pacific region with an average altitude of 2-5 meters, which make it particularly vulnerable to storm surges and tsunami inundation. The national action plan aims to combat the adverse impacts that climate change poses to the country's sustainable development plans. The action plan consists of 6 priority goals – improved governance, enhanced technical knowledge base, climate change vulnerability assessment, enhanced community preparedness, development of sustainable energy and increased inter-agency cooperation within the government.
