17 - 20 April 2017, Marrakech, Morocco: Morocco is tackling the threat of climate change by adopting a series of green policies, and working to integrate adaptation planning into all the country's development policies. To advance this process, the Government of Morocco requested the support of NAP-GSP, in collaboration with UNDP Morocco, as well as GIZ and UNITAR, for a workshop to develop and strengthen the technical skills of the climate change focal points of several Moroccan ministries.
Thirty-five participants from government ministries - including the State Secretariat for Sustainable Development, Ministry of Equipment, Transport, Logistics and Water, Ministry of Planning, Territory, Planning, Housing and Urban Policy, Ministry of Economy and Finance, etc. - and specialized agencies - High Commissioner for the Plan, Municipal Equipment Fund, National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water, Hassan II Agronomic and Veterinary Institute, Forest Research Center, etc. - attended the three-day workshop. The participants developed their theoretical knowledge about adaptation, and shared their experiences in adaptation planning and implementation. The sessions encouraged the participants to think constructively about the most appropriate institutional framework for implementing an effective NAP, through practical exercises, discussion groups, testimonials and lectures.
Roadmap for the NAP process in Morocco
One day was devoted to the revision of the draft roadmap for the progress of the NAP process in Morocco. This roadmap was initiated in October 2016 during a stocktaking workshop on NAP, which was the starting point for the effective launch of the NAP process. Participants were divided into five groups, and asked to reach agreement on the architecture of the NAP framework document.
Outcomes of the workshop
Participants improved their understanding of the NAP process and identified entry points for adaptation into policy making, which will be compiled into a forthcoming report.
